Connecting the adaptor housing to the 460 engine was easy enough. The hard part was connecting the torque converter adaptor. It was a bit difficult to get the converter bolts to line up with the adapter. I suspect this is because I installed a used transmission/converter from bone yard. Stabbing /seating the torque converter with the extra adaptor weight was a challenge as well. Bolting the transmission up was incredibly easy, as the transmission mated to the adapter perfectly. Unfortunately, the used transmission’s torque converter, would not seat so that everything bound up with 1/16” gap between the transmission and adapter housing. I fought this for a long time, taking the transmission to shops to make sure the converter was seated. Brad at Speed Gems was very helpful giving me converter setback measurements from the bell housing. In the end, I came across another used 6R80 at the right price that went in perfectly. I did have to get my driveshaft cut and outfitted for connection to the 6R80. Adding the Quick 6 controller to the order was convenient and simple to wire up once I identified the throttle position wire from my Pro Flo 4 fuel infection system. I used the Quick 6 speed output to my Dakota Digital gauges and calibrated the speedometer with no problems. Headers were a problem for me with a 460 in a 73-79 F-series. Frame, starter, and power steering gear clearances were all issues. After a short drive, the starter was so heat soaked, it barely turned over. I could have wrapped everything but chose to reinstall stock exhaust manifolds in the short term. Clearances are now great. I had to cut the passenger-side ‘ear’ off the 6R80 for stock starter mounting to route the exhaust but not a big deal.
The Speed Gems adaptor installed like a factory piece of equipment when mating the 6R80 to the Ford 460. Taking the truck on the highway at 75mph and seeing the low RPMs convinced me this was a great choice. It ended up being a bit cheaper than fitting up a 5or6 speed manual even with all the used transmission issues I had. The FO2501 kit is an excellent choice for those who want to use a 460 with a modern transmission.
